ART DIRECTION / UX / VISUAL DESIGN

Company: Juxtapoz Magazine
Project: Juxtapoz.com Redesign
Role: Art Direction, UX/UI Design

As Art Director of Juxtapoz Magazine, I led the redesign of Juxtapoz.com, working in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief, CTO and a freelance developer. Primary goals of the redesign were to simplify navigation, feature the cover artist of the magazine and increase advertising revenue.

CHALLENGE

Redesign a global art magazine’s website to put the art and artists at the fore

It had been years since Juxtapoz.com’s last redesign. The aesthetic was outdated, ads were awkwardly served, and the site was not optimized for mobile viewing. Additionally, the navigation had become cumbersome with too many categories to choose from.

Beyond The Cover

One of the primary goals of the website redesign was to prominently feature the cover artist of the month. Squarespace was interested in partnering with us, and I came up with the idea to use Squarespace’s platform to do a multimedia feature each month on our cover artists. It was called Beyond The Cover, and the concept was to feature video and audio interviews of the cover artist, as well as other exclusive content not included in the print magazine interview.

50% increase in ad revenue

Within 6 months of launch, the redesign of the site had produced at 50% increase in advertising revenue. We also found that time on site had increased by 20–30%, with significantly more content sharing and internal cross-linking.
